April on the Lakeshore: Home Is Where You Love Living
Condo vs. Single-Family Home (Plus a Simple Dessert!)
April in West Michigan always feels like a fresh start. The snow melts away, the trees start budding again, and everyone seems ready to get outside and enjoy the longer days…Blah, blah blah. We all know the reality of Spring in the Summer. It’s also the time of year when many people begin thinking about their living situation and what kind of home truly fits their lifestyle…or the winter made them realize they truly dislike where they live. Ope, did I say that out loud? It’s true though!!
Whether you’re planning to buy later this year or simply exploring options, one of the most common questions people ask is:
“Should I buy a condo or a single-family home?”
Both can be fantastic options depending on your needs, lifestyle, and long-term plans. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each.
Single-Family Homes
When most people picture homeownership, they’re imagining a single-family home. These homes offer independence and space, which is a big draw for many buyers throughout Ottawa, Kent, and Muskegon counties.
Pros of Single-Family Homes
More privacy
Since single-family homes don’t share walls with neighbors, they typically offer more peace and quiet.
Outdoor space
Yards are perfect for pets, kids, gardening, or hosting summer bonfires and backyard barbecues.
Freedom to customize
You usually have more flexibility to remodel, paint, landscape, or make changes to your property.
Room to grow
Many buyers choose single-family homes for the additional space and long-term flexibility.
Things to Consider
While they have plenty of benefits, single-family homes also come with a few responsibilities:
All maintenance is your responsibility
Lawn care and snow removal fall on the homeowner
Purchase prices can be higher compared to condos
For many homeowners, though, the trade-off is worth it for the space and independence.
Condos
Condominiums have become increasingly popular across West Michigan, especially for buyers looking for a simpler, lower-maintenance lifestyle.
Pros of Condos
Low maintenance living
Many exterior responsibilities—like lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal—are handled by the homeowners association (HOA).
Convenience
Condos can be ideal for people who travel often or want a “lock-and-leave” lifestyle.
Affordability
In some markets, condos can be more affordable than single-family homes, making them attractive for first-time buyers.
Community amenities
Some condo communities offer shared features such as walking paths, clubhouses, or fitness areas.
Things to Consider
Condo living also comes with a few unique factors to think about:
Monthly HOA fees
Association rules or restrictions
Shared walls or common spaces with neighbors
For buyers who prefer convenience and less home maintenance, condos can be an excellent fit.
Choosing the Right Home for Your Lifestyle
At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best home is simply the one that fits your life.
Some people love the independence and outdoor space of a house, while others appreciate the ease and simplicity of condo living. The key is thinking about your priorities—how you spend your time, how much maintenance you want to handle, and what kind of space feels like home.
If you’re starting to explore your options, it can be helpful to look at both types of homes and see what feels right.
Bonus: A Simple Dessert for Spring 🍫
Every good spring gathering needs something sweet, and this dessert is incredibly simple to make. My kids loved this one!!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Dip
Ingredients
1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
Mini chocolate chips (optional)
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
Stir until smooth and creamy.
Sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top.
Serve with strawberries, apple slices, or graham crackers.
It takes just a few minutes to make and is perfect for spring get-togethers or a quick sweet treat.
Thinking About Buying This Year?
Even if you’re still in the early stages of thinking about it, exploring your options now can make the homebuying process much easier later on. Learning about the market, understanding what you want in a home, and seeing what’s available can all help you feel confident when the time comes.
And whether your dream home is a cozy condo or a backyard-ready house, the goal is always the same: finding a place where you truly love living.
